Stars May newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers of our Kingston and Worcester Park Nurseries,

Welcome to our newsletter for May 2017.

April marked the beginning of Spring and notable days included World Health Day, National Gardening Week and Earth Day, which had the children playing in our gardens and creating instruments from recycled materials. May kicks off on a literary note with Children’s Book Week and there’s a lot to be culturally thankful for this month too, with celebrations spanning Buddhism, Judaism and Hinduism, not to mention Africa Day on 25th May.

    1–7 May - Children’s Book Week

Children’s Book Week.pngThe first week of May marks Children’s Book Week. The children will explore stories told by a variety of authors and will create their own story boards based on personal interests, which will be shared with their classmates.

    4 May - Firefighters’ Day

Firefighters’ Day.pngThe children will create their own fire engines using junk modelling and our own red and blue ribbon badges to celebrate Firefighters’ Day. They will also be able to dress up as the people who help us in the community.

8–14 May - Sun Awareness Week

Sun Awareness Week.pngMid-May marks Sun Awareness Week. The children will learn about the importance of keeping safe in the sun and how to apply sun cream effectively. They’ll share their own holiday experiences and will be exploring in the sand and water trays. We’ll be making our own sun crafts and playing safety games such as ‘Dressing Safe for the Sun’.

    10 May - Wesak

Wesak.pngTo celebrate the Buddhist festival, Wesak, the children will be making colourful lotus lanterns and bird cages. They’ll also be learning about the Borobudur temple and the ‘Buddha’.

15 May - International Day of Families

International Day of Families.png15th May marks the International Day of Families. During the week we’ll be talking about our family members and why they are special to us. We’ll also be sharing photographs of our families, painting family portraits and will commemorate the day with a fun family picnic tea.

    25 May - Africa Day

Africa Day.pngTo commemorate Africa Day, the children will be creating their own African masks and shields. They’ll also be using junk modelling to make an African drum and will be learning a ‘clap game’. The child will also explore the wonders of an African safari in the small world area.

    27 May - Ramadan Begins

Ramadan Begins.pngTo mark the start of Ramadan, the children will be making star and crescent moon mobiles, which will be used to decorate the nursery room. They will also be making Ramadan greeting cards.

    30 May – 1 June - Shavuot

Shavuot.pngThe traditional Jewish celebration of Shavuot will see the children painting flowers and plants in remembrance of the flowers of Mount Sinai. They’ll also be talking about the ‘Torah’ and why this is special during Shavuot.

    Photographs of your Family

Please can we remind Parents/Carers to bring in any photographs of your family for your child to share with their peers on International Family Day on Monday 15th May 2017.

Family Picnic Tea– In celebration of International Family Day

To celebrate International Family Day, we would like to invite Parents and another family member to join us for a picnic tea in the garden on Monday 15th May 2017 at 3.30pm – weather permitted! If you would like to attend, please RSVP by Monday 8th May 2017 by emailing worcesterpark@starsdaynursery.co.uk or kingston@starsdaynursery.co.uk.

You are more than welcome to attend with your child if this is not a usual nursery day for you. Please may I remind you there is a maximum of 2 guests per child.

    Reminders

    Please can I remind Parents:

    • To bring in factor 50 sun screen that is labelled with your child’s name and the date of purchase, and a suitable hat that shields the back and front of the head so your child can play safely in the garden.
    • To bring items for ‘Show and Tell’ every Wednesday so all the Pre-School children can take part. Parents, please do not let your child bring any other toys as these are getting lost.
    • Please ensure you email the nursery to confirm the absence of your child.
    • We have a ‘no mobile phone’ policy at the nursery. This is in line with our safeguarding and child protection policies because of cameras on phones. Please do not accept calls when in the nursery.
    • Please ensure you are closing and locking the stair gate behind you to ensure the safeguarding of all the children.
    • Please do not wait in the doorway of your child’s room with the door held open, as other children may try to come through.

    Activities to continue at home

    • Create a family collage by cutting and sticking family photographs.
    • Visit your local library for Children’s Book Week.
    • Plant flowers at home for Shavuot, and why not make a multi-coloured vase with junk modelling or papier mache.
